Constitution of the Bathurst Agricultural Society
6th of March 1850 marks the birth of The Bathurst Agricultural Show, the Society’s annual and much anticipated three day fundraising event. National Exhibitors and those from the Eastern Cape and surrounds book their stands, either indoor or outdoor, to market their products, these Exhibitors represent a complete cross-section of the South African business sector. An extensive Small Commercial and Craft Market section is demarcated for small business entrepreneurs encouraging local as well as national creative talent to display and sell their craft thereby enhancing & complementing employment in what is traditionally an economically depressed region.
The annual Bathurst Show provides an ideal environment wherein business partnerships are formed; trading opportunities furthered, and the cross-section of idea sharing takes place. In 2008 the Centenary (100th) Show was held with record attendance figures of over 10,000!

Beside the opportunity to exhibit and trade, the Society calls for entries each year through a comprehensive Catalogue inviting potential participants to compete in their specific field. The categories cover a broad spectrum of farming methods, arts, crafts, and home industries such as a Horse Section; Cattle Section; Small Stock Section; Pineapple Section; Best Conserved Farm; Best Agricultural Invention; Art; Photography; Baking; Home Craft; to name but a few. Each section is judged according to the highest standards applicable and prizes are awarded in the form of trophies together with items generously donated by local business and the public.
The Horse Section boasts a proud partnership with the Agricultural Society throughout its history ensuring that high standards of equestrian events and coaching are continued and encouraged by a new generation of South Africans.
In conjunction with the Eastern Cape Agricultural Show Association (ECASA) and local schools the society is training scholars up to the age of 18 in a number of categories, at present focusing on horses, cattle, sheep and goats. The Bathurst Agricultural Show will become a qualifying show and the programme enables the youngsters to participate and compete in the regional and National Agricultural Youth Shows. A character building experience which gives children who are interested in agriculture an opportunity to learn new skills and realize they can excel in exciting alternative ways.
